What To Do With Your Dog When It’s Too Hot to Go Outside (Tucson Pet Guide)

Updated: 1 day ago

If you live in Tucson, you know—summer heat is no joke. Once we hit triple digits, even early mornings can feel intense, and by midday, the ground can be dangerously hot for your pup’s paws.

At Pura Vida Pet Care, your pet’s safety is always our top priority. During the hottest months, our routine shifts to keep your dogs safe, comfortable, and still living their best (indoor!) life.

So what do you do when walks aren’t an option? Let’s talk about it 👇

First, Let’s Talk Safety

When temperatures rise into the triple digits:

  • Pavement can burn paws in seconds

  • Dogs can overheat quickly (even in shade)

  • High-energy play outdoors becomes unsafe

That’s why we adjust our schedule:

  • Morning walks wrap up by 8:00–8:30am (sometimes earlier depending on your pup)

  • Afternoon visits focus on quick bathroom breaks + indoor time

Every visit still includes a bathroom opportunity at the start and end—but the majority of our time shifts indoors where it’s cool and safe.

Why Indoor Enrichment Matters

Here’s the good news: mental stimulation can be just as tiring (if not more!) than physical exercise.

When dogs don’t get enough stimulation, you might see:

  • Restlessness

  • Barking or attention-seeking

  • Destructive behavior

  • Extra zoomies 😅

Indoor enrichment helps:✔ Burn energy✔ Reduce anxiety✔ Build confidence✔ Strengthen your bond

Turn Your Home Into a Mini Adventure

When it’s too hot to explore outside, we bring the adventure inside! With just a few everyday items, you can create a fun, enriching environment that keeps your dog mentally and physically engaged.

Create a simple obstacle course:Use pillows, blankets, and chairs to build a mini course. Guide your pup over, under, and around obstacles using treats or toys—this builds confidence, coordination, and focus.

Set up a scent game:Hide treats around the house, under cups, or inside toys. You can even create a trail from room to room for a full “treasure hunt.” Sniffing is incredibly mentally stimulating and tiring for dogs!

Rotate activity stations:Instead of doing one activity the whole time, switch between a snuffle mat, puzzle toy, play session, and calm chew time. Short, varied activities keep things exciting and engaging.

Create a safe indoor play space:Clear an area for tug or soft fetch. Hallways and living rooms work great for short bursts of movement.

Mix in training:Ask for a “sit” before throwing a toy or practice “place” between activities. This adds structure and gives their brain a workout.

Add a cool-down corner:Finish with a frozen lick mat, Kong, or chew in a cozy spot to help your pup relax and decompress.

💡 Pro tip: 5–10 minute activity rotations are more effective (and more fun!) than one long activity.

Our Favorite Indoor Enrichment Activities

Here are some of our go-to activities we use with our Pack:

🐶 Sniff & Seek

  • Hide treats around the house

  • Use cups or containers for a “find it” game

  • Let your dog use their nose (this is HUGE mental work!)

🧩 Puzzle Time

  • Puzzle toys

  • Snuffle mats

  • Treat-dispensing toys

🧊 Cool & Calm Options

  • Frozen lick mats

  • Stuffed & frozen Kongs

  • Great for calming + cooling at the same time

🎾 Play (Yes, Indoors!)

  • Tug-of-war

  • Soft indoor fetch

  • Light play sessions (depending on space)

🎓 Training Refreshers

  • Sit, stay, place

  • Touch, leave it, wait

  • Short sessions = big mental payoff

🦴 Chew & Chill Time

  • Safe chews

  • Dentals

  • Great for relaxation and mental release

💛 Calm Connection Time

  • Brushing

  • Massage

  • Snuggles

  • Sometimes slowing down is exactly what they need

What To Have Ready at Home

To help us make the most of each visit, we recommend having:

  • Approved training treats

  • Snuffle mat

  • Puzzle toys

  • Lick mat or Kong

  • Cups/containers for games

  • Tug toys

  • Soft indoor fetch toys

  • Safe chews or dentals

Tucson-Specific Tip: Check the Ground!

A good rule of thumb:If you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for at least 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Even early mornings can heat up fast here in the desert—so when in doubt, shorter outdoor time + more indoor fun is always the safest choice.
